The city of Saint John, New Brunswick, Canada has suffered from many fires but the Great Fire of June 20, 1877 was the most destructive of all. During the short space of nine hours, two-fifths (200 acres) of the entire city were laid in ashes and one thousand six hundred and twelve houses were levelled to the earth.

Illustrations include, Ruins of the Germain St. Baptist Church by moonlight, Victoria Skating Rink, The Temporary W U Tel Office, View from Queen Square, Germain St showing Victoria Hotel,  Ruins of the Bank of New Brunswick, Wentworth Street, Canterbury St - showing Ritchie's Building in the distance, rince William Street, Inside the Savings Bank,Burnt District - showing smoking ruins - taken from Lower Cove,North side King St and Bell Tower, King Square after the fire - encampment of the 97th Regiment, Academy of Music, New Post Office, Pine's Brick Building - the only brick building between Canterbury and Germain St., Trinity Church, Bell Tower and King Square, King Street and Victoria Hotel.
