Honoured: Reuben Cohen among 10 new members of Order of New Brunswick

A1

FREDERICTON - Reuben Cohen, one of New Brunswick's best-known business leaders and philanthropists, was among a group of New Brunswickers awarded the province's highest honour on Wednesday - the Order of New Brunswick.

After a long and storied career, Cohen said he looks back on his community service work with the greatest satisfaction.

"I have probably directly and indirectly started organizations that have created more than a quarter of a billion dollars today," he said. "I once had 20,000 employees in my day all over Canada and the United States. But that's long gone and what I like to think about and remember is the community service."

Born in 1921 in Moncton, Cohen is already a companion of the Order of Canada and a member of the New Brunswick Business Hall of Fame, as well as chancellor emeritus of Dalhousie University and recipient of numerous honorary degrees from universities in Atlantic Canada.

The octogenarian's career took off in 1940s after he completed his law degree at Dalhousie University. He went on to found Central Guaranty Trust, which expanded into a multibillion-dollar empire liquidated in 1992. He was a director of several major companies, including Petro-Canada, Maritime Life Assurance Company and the Mortgage Insurance Company of Canada.

Cohen is also a philanthropist with a passion for the arts inspired by his late wife, Louise. The Université de Moncton renamed its art gallery after the pair in recognition of a fund they established to help the institution amass a large Acadian art collection. He was also involved with the YMCA of Greater Moncton, Friends of Moncton Hospital Foundation and the Moncton Rotary Club.

His memoir, A Time to Tell: the Public Life of a Private Man, was published in 1998 and became one of the top 10 non-fiction hardcover best-sellers in the country.
