Desperate Stages - New
Brunswick's Theatre in the 1840's by Edward Mullaly tells the stories of three
apparently unrelated men who ended their lives miserably after involvement
in New Brunswick Theatres in Canada in the 1840's. They were first, Thomas
Hill, a Fredericton newspaper editor and playright. Second was Henry W. Preston,
a threatrical troupe manager, who arrived in Fredericton in 1844. The thrid
was Charles Freer, a wandering English actor and member of Preston"s threatrical
troupe, who found himself working the New Brunswick stages. Thomas Hill died
in poverty, Henry W. Preston jumped off a ferry landing in Albany New York,
and Charles Freer in near starvation commits suicide in a tavern near London
Bridge.
