An Earl Must Have a Wife - Will R Bird
in a blend of history and fiction recreates Joseph Frederick Wallet
DesBarres, Lieutenant Governor of Cape Breton Island from 1784-87 and of
Prince Edward Island from 1804-12 - one of the most extraordinary characters
ever known in Nova Scotia. a soldier, surveyor, fluent speaker, scrupulously
honest, yet he was notorious even in those days for his many affairs with
women. His two common-law wives were Mary Cannon and Martha Williams. The
story is a mixture of fact & fiction. The author read more than 1,000
letters written by or addressed to DesBarres. The gaps in the record have
been filled in by the author from archival material & where none existed
he has used reasonable conjecture.
