MINTO MINERS - Photographs & Text by Lawrence
Chrismas. Appears to have been published in 1989. 45 pages. About
twenty beautiful black and white photographs and stories of old-time
underground coal miners from the village of Minto, New Brunswick
Canada.
This book was commissioned by the
village of Minto as part of their 350th anniversary celebration to
commemorate coal mining in the vicinity of Minto.

Crawford born in 1904, Charlie Arsenault born in Rogersville, Jimmy
Forrester born in Glasgow, Scotland, Bill Busch born in 1903 in
Germany, Jimmy Richardson, Fred Legere born in Joggins, Nova Scotia,
Firman Betts, Roger Forges born in Belgium, Stefan Bielecki born in
1898 in Poland, Breamwell Moore born in Yorkshire, England, Rubin Reed,
Harold Brown, Russell and Arthur Ackerman, rose and Manuel Caterini,
Louie Madore, Eli Goguen, Ed Ryan, Wendall Welton, Dominic Dicarlo born
near Rome in Italy, Dick Quigley, Garnet Richardson, Frank Coakley,
Billy Spencer, and the Centre fold shows a group of men.
Eli Goguen’s photo is on the cover of
the publication. Excerpt from Eli’s story: “ I was born in Boston in
1892 and worked in the coal mines in the Minto area for about 50 years.
When I first worked in the mines, we had no electricity so we had to
use pails to bail the water out. In the old days, we used to wear
oilskin coats, just like the fishermen.”
