You're On The Miramichi - William T. Griffin.

William T Griffin was born near Stanley, York County, NB in 1881.  He married Mary Elizabeth Gordon in 1903. His death occurred in 1974. Largely self-educated, an avid reader, and an inherent nature lover, he developed an early habit of recording anecdotes and incidents arising from his life and experiences as trapper, guide and woodsman. 85 pages.

A great addition to the bookshelf of the woodsman or those interested in the Miramichi. A hundred years ago, one of the up and coming New Brunswick sporting guides was “Billy Griffin” of Boiestown, Miramichi.  His youthful good looks and success in promoting his home province as a destination for sportsmen got him selected to accompany New Brunswick displays to shows in Boston, New York, Philadelphia, and various other US cities.  A newspaper advertisement published by the Jordan Marsh Co. around 1900 shows a photo of him in his guide’s uniform, and states that, while in Boston for the Sportsmen’s Show, he will be giving “demonstrations and advice” at noon-time in Jordan Marsh’s sporting goods department.

With the growing popularity of moose, caribou, and deer hunting for sport, in addition to salmon fishing, Griffin built up a successful outfitting business, organizing expeditions in the Southwest Miramichi water-shed.  Later, as William T. Griffin, he erected the Griff-Inns at Boiestown – a cluster of handsome cabins set in a grove of pine trees.  In a prominent place among them the American portrait artist Ernest L Ispen also built a stylish ‘studio cabin’, where he holidayed with his wife and painted and fished for salmon.

All of this and more is recounted in this fascinating book by “Billy” himself.  YOU'RE ON THE MIRAMICHI, by William T. Griffin, an autobiographical narrative interspersed with old photos and samples of the author’s verse on outdoor themes, published posthumously by  Brunswick Press, Fredericton, NB, 1981, 85 pages, 6 x 9, printed on good quality cream-colored paper.  Colorful pictorial softcover shows canoes besides a steel-blue stream on the front and a picture of the author in his working gear on the back.
