A VIEW FROM THE BUCKET - a Grand Lake (New Brunswick) and McNabs Island memoir by Jean Redekopp
Jean Redekopp was born in a farmhouse at Young's Cove, Grand Lake, New Brunswick in the late 1930s.
"A VIEW FROM THE BUCKET" is a memoir about the early years of the author and her three siblings, their mother and mostly absent father. Redekopp sees life as one great adventure and writes with humour about activities that only the imaginations of three sisters can concoct, and about their many near-death experiences, a mother who had no idea how to raise a family, and a father who when home on furlough teaches them wilderness survival, edible wild plants and how to tell army time. At the end of World War II, the Young family lived on McNabs Island in Halifax Harbour while their father was stationed there with the Provost Corps in the Canadian Armed Forces.
After their return to Grand Lake [New Brunswick], K. C. Irving starts pulp drives through the lake, electricity and telephone lines are introduced and the dirt road in front of their home becomes the Trans Canada Highway."
