REFLECTIONS
- The Story of Hampton by David Keirstead
The history of Hampton Station and Hampton Village, Kings County, New
Brunswick, Canada, (near Saint John) touches upon not only
Hampton but the communities of Lakeside, Lower Norton and Warneford. A
typical small village similar to many others in New Brunswick with a
mixture of Loyalists, Scots and Irish. Some of the chapters are: The
Indians and the French; The Loyalists; Kennebecasis River; Dutch Point
Road area and the trains. Many photos of homes and businesses that are
still standing or gone can be found in the book.
One of the persons with biographical information is Dr. John J. Ryan
who was a celebrated dentist in Paris although his birthplace was New
Brunswick. It is said that his suite of offices on the Champs Elysees
rented for $20,000 a year and his clientele were of the nobility who
paid a minimum fee equivalent to $200. Dr. Ryan studied dentistry in
the United States.
In 1872, he went to England and it was during this time he became a
member of the Bisley shooting team. He decided to take a quick trip to
the Paris Exposition and was so charmed with Paris he decided Paris
would be his home. He married in London in 1881 to Mary Elizabeth
Curtis, a girl from Missouri who was studying voice in Paris.
Mrs. Ryan did not enjoy living in Paris as much as her husband so he
built a summer home in Lakeside, near Hampton, in New Brunswick,
Canada.
