- A view of the people of nineteenth century Westmorland County, New
Brunswick (Canada), as perceived through the journalistic literature of the
time by Helen L. Bateman . Number 532 of 1000 numbered copies.(So I assume
only 1000 copies were printed) No date of publication.. The author states
in the Preface, " The people of the area and the time began to come to life
through what they had read and what they had written. My study gradually
became a journey into the past of my own ancestors.
Many letters and references to the lettters and articles in the newspaper
of the time and the controversail topics in the newspaper - even led one
editor to jail. The day editor - Johm T Hawkes was released June 27,
1888, he sailed down the St John River by steamer to the Dufferin Hotel in
Saint John, where he was serenaded by the City Coronet Band..
Thad Stevens was another editor - his wife was charged with the death of
her adopted daughter.
Mention is made of finding the body in 1978 of Tim McCarthy. A train
brought three hundred curious Monctonians to Shediac to view the
corpse.
